India’s 10-man hockey team stuns Great Britain to advance to the semi-finals of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris thanks to PR Sreejesh’s heroics in the shootout.

In the second quarter, the Indian men’s hockey team, down to just 10 players, won 4-2 in a shootout against Great Britain to secure a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympic quarterfinals.

Harmanpreet Singh (22′) scored his seventh goal of the tournament to give India an early lead, while Lee Morton (27′) scored Great Britain’s only goal. The match ended 1-1 after full time.

After winning bronze at Tokyo 2020, this is India’s second consecutive appearance in the men’s hockey Olympic semifinals.

In the first quarter, both teams matched each other’s moves. Both goalkeepers were tested, but no goals were scored.

The game changed dramatically in the second quarter when India’s Amit Rohidas received a red card for striking an opponent’s face with his stick.

Despite being a player down, captain Harmanpreet Singh scored a crucial penalty corner, putting India ahead with a brilliant drag flick.

Lee Morton equalized for Great Britain a few minutes later. After PR Sreejesh saved initial attempts, Morton’s shot went past him, ending the first half at 1-1.

Great Britain took control in the third quarter, preventing India from making any offensive moves.

They had some good chances in the final minutes, but failed to break through India’s defense.

PR Sreejesh made a crucial save in a one-on-one situation, keeping India in the game. Despite chasing the ball for most of the match, India managed to reach the shootout.

In the shootout, Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, and Rajkumar Pal scored for India. Great Britain’s Connor Williamson missed his shot, and Sreejesh saved Philip Roper’s attempt.

India will face the winner of the Germany vs. Argentina quarterfinal in the hockey semifinals at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
